01The big picture

Build in the UAE.Choose the right foundation.

1. Entity

Choose a mainland or free-zone licence for the actual activity. Many activities allow full foreign ownership; regulated and strategic sectors need separate review.

2. Foundation

Trade licence, approved activities, premises, accounting and tax registration form the operating foundation. A licence does not make every income stream tax-free.

3. Footprint

Where the business operates, where owners live and how income is earned all matter. Company formation, immigration permission and tax residence are separate decisions.

Mainland and free-zone structures serve different activities and operating needs. Compare licensing, premises, market access and tax treatment—not just the advertised setup package.

02Formation & taxation

Clear numbers.Conditions behind the rate.

Ordinary corporate tax, qualifying free-zone income and personal taxation have different rules. A UAE company is not automatically exempt from tax at home or abroad.

Separate rules

A residency visa does not by itself settle tax residence. Personal business activity can fall within corporate tax, and home-country or treaty obligations need a separate review.

03Residency pathways

Set up a business.Choose your residence route.

Four routes relevant to founders, investors and overseas workers—not an exhaustive visa list. Eligibility and work permission depend on the category and the relevant authority.

01 / Business-linked residence

BUS

Business investor / owner

Residence linked to an eligible UAE business, subject to licensing and immigration approval. Documents, sponsorship arrangements and terms depend on the emirate and issuing authority.

Best suited to
Founders operating a licensed UAE business

02 / Five-year renewable residence

GRN

Green visa

A self-sponsored route for qualifying investors or business partners. Investment evidence and authority approval are required; simply registering a company is not enough.

Best suited to
Eligible investors and business partners seeking self-sponsored residence

03 / Five- or ten-year renewable residence

GLD

Golden visa

Long-term residence for qualifying categories including entrepreneurs and investors. Category-specific evidence and approvals apply; it is not automatic for every founder.

Best suited to
Entrepreneurs or investors who meet a qualifying category

04 / One-year self-sponsored residence

VRT

Virtual work

For eligible people working for an employer outside the UAE. Overseas employment, the current income requirement, health insurance and medical fitness must be evidenced.

Best suited to
Overseas employees living in the UAE while working remotely

A trade licence is not an automatic residence approval. None of these routes is citizenship by investment.

A trade licence starts the conversation, not a guaranteed account. Banks assess beneficial owners, residency, business activity, documentation and source of funds.

05Credit & travel

The right card. Not just the biggest promise.

Three UAE-issued travel cards to compare—not a universal ranking. A business account does not guarantee personal credit-card approval; residency, income and issuer checks still apply.
